Corteva has extensive and world-class capability in plant transformation and genome editing. We have developed novel technologies, such as the use of morphogenic genes (Lowe et al, 2016, 2018), vectors (Anand et al., 2018) and Ochrobactrum- mediated transformation (Anand et al., 2017) and have highly skilled personnel with deep tissue culture knowledge and expertise. Corteva will closely work with the technology center in Seville and the sunflower breeding team to ensure fast implementation gene editing approaches to elite sunflower germplasm.
Due to the importance of sunflower to European farmers, and representing a key oil source for European but also global consumers, Corteva is engaged since many years in breeding innovative seed solutions for this key crop. Corteva is for many decades a leader in sunflower breeding providing continuously improved superior hybrids to the European market having excellent yield potential but especially high yield stability due to drought tolerance and significantly improved disease resistance to many biotic stress factors.
Corteva’s sunflower breeding team and breeding center’s have a long tradition and expertise in sunflower germplasm evaluation which is needed to compare photosynthetic improved sunflower germplasm with currently available elite germplasm. Corteva agrisciences additionally has the market access to successfully introduce improved, gene-edited sunflower elite lines and hybrids to ensure broad implementation of research results from GAIN4CROPS to European farmers strengthening their competitiveness.
